The executive director of The Cottages at Quail Creek talks memory care and her passion to help families.
Amarillo, TX, Aug. 22, 2017 – When Tiffany Alley graduated from Texas Tech University in 2006, she didn’t expect her life would be dedicated to helping others cope with memory disorders. Looking back, the new executive director of The Cottages at Quail Creek wouldn’t change a thing.
“I am excited to start this adventure,” says Alley, who was named The Cottages’ executive director in April. “I truly want to not just help the individual who has the disease, but their family too.”
The Cottages at Quail Creek is a cutting-edge certified residence for people living with memory disorders. Within its home-like setting, highly qualified staff members provide 24-hour-a-day care to residents with around-the-clock nursing available. The Cottages is dedicated to providing not only the highest level of care to its residents, but also the support families need to help them cope with the changes their loved ones are experiencing due to progressive memory disorders.
The Cottages’ focus on both resident care and family support was especially attractive to Alley. After all, she understands all too well that memory disorders have profound effects on the entire family. Her aunt was diagnosed in her 60s with Alzheimer’s disease, and took her life within three years. Watching her aunt’s struggle and the effects it had on her family ignited Alley’s passion for helping others in need of memory care solutions.
“I have experience as not only a memory care facility employee, but as a family member and it changes the way you look at everything,” she explains. The Cottages’ drive to provide family support programming, she adds, helps create a compassionate, understanding environment that benefits residents and their loved ones alike.
Alley’s career began shortly after college when she moved back to her native Amarillo to take a position as marketing director at an assisted living facility in the area. Initially, she thought the job would be a “stepping stone,” but soon learned “God had a different plan.” As she helped families take the step into assisted living and worked with new residents to acclimate them to their surroundings, she found her path.
“I saw the benefit of assisted living and memory care and knew that what I was doing was not just a job, but I felt responsible for helping every family I spoke to,” she explains.
After five years at the assisted living facility, Alley accepted a post in hospice care. Being able to see the benefits of hospice firsthand was tremendously rewarding, but Alley says her heart belonged in assisted living. In 2014, she returned to the field and has remained ever since, accepting the position at The Cottages in April.
The Cottages at Quail Creek is dedicated to helping people living with memory disorders enjoy the highest quality of life possible. By providing around-the-clock care in a home-like environment, the entire team is dedicated to making residents and their families feel comfortable in their decisions and within their surroundings. It’s that dedication to residents and their families that makes The Cottages such a good fit for Alley, she said.
“I love The Cottages,” said Alley. “I have always been very familiar with The Cottages being that it opened in 1997. It always seemed like The Cottages had expertise in caring for people who have Alzheimer’s and dementia. Now that I am here, I know why it’s a top choice for families who are looking for a facility or assisted living: It feels like home.”
The combination of home-like touches and a high level of individualized care really stood out to Alley when she was exploring the possibility of joining The Cottages’ team.
“Thanks to the dedicated staff and high staff to resident ratio, residents receive outstanding care in a in a secure environment and it feels like home,” she said. “The residents know each other, the families all know each other and it feels like a family here, because it is.”
